Santo Gato Takes Command in New Orleans
Dan Lynch, Ken Sentel and Merrill Scherer’s Santo Gato, away alertly and quickly in command, made the pace and drew off late to capture Friday’s $49,000 allowance grass dash at Fair Grounds by two and a half lengths.
Ridden by leading jockey Rosie Napravnik and trained by part-owner Merrill Scherer, Santa Gato toured the about 5 1/2-furlong distance over the firm Stall-Wilson turf course in 1:04.72 following early splits of 23.05 and 47.14. The altered son of Kitten’s Joy paid $23, $8 and $5.80 and increased his earnings to $110,180 with his second victory in 18 career starts.
Ike and Dawn Thrash’s Heir Joe found his best stride late to gain the place, paying $3.20 and $2.80 while finishing a head in front of Gainesway Thoroughbreds and Thoroughbred Legends Racing Stable’s Temp, who returned $6 in the show spot.
