Santa Anita in running for Breeders' Cup

Santa Anita Park may have a new trump card in its bid to host the coveted 2012 Breeders' Cup World Championships.

Former Breeders' Cup CEO Greg Avioli has taken the helm as chief executive officer of Stronach Entertainment, and now oversees Stronach Group's racetracks and other assets, including Santa Anita Park.

In addition to Santa Anita, Churchill Downs in Kentucky - which is hosting this year's Breeders' Cup for the eighth time - and Belmont Park in New York are also finalists for the 2012 Breeders' Cup.

"One of the strengths we bring to the bid - due to my experience at the Breeders' Cup - is I do understand the factors that are important and we tried to emphasize those factors in our proposal," Avioli said from Lexington Monday. He presented the company's bid proposal to Breeders' Cup officials last month in Manhattan.
