Santa Anita: Up In Time Wins Ramser
British-bred Up In Time proved her 11-1 upset in Del Mar’s Grade II
San Clemente Handicap was no fluke Sunday when Martin Garcia drove her
to a 1 ¼ -length victory over Celestial Kitten in Santa Anita’s Grade
III, $100,000 Harold C. Ramser, Sr. Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at one
mile on turf.
Sent off this time at odds of 5-1 in a field of 11, Up In Time
rallied from just off the pace to gain the lead in midstretch and
steadily draw clear while covering the distance in 1:34.25. Celestial
Kitten, with Patrick Valenzuela, edged Bauble Queen by a neck for the
place after having yielded a brief midstretch lead to the winner.
Comebacking Sarah’s Secret, the 19-10 favorite who had won her
first four starts before being derailed in the San Clemente, could never
mount much of a threat while finishing fifth.
Trained by Simon Callaghan for Anthony Ramsden and Three
Chimneys Farm, Up In Time had tried to parlay her upset in the one mile
San Clemente on July 24 into a 10-1 victory in the Del Mar Oaks on Aug.
20, but she failed to muster a rally in Grade I company while checking
in seventh.
Callaghan had the chestnut filly well spotted on Sunday. “She
had a good trip,” he said, “and she was traveling so easily through the
race. She was a little handier on the pace than I expected she’d be, but
she stayed on well and it was a good performance. She’s a really nice
filly, and she’s only going to improve, so I’m very happy with her.”
“The race set up perfect,” said Garcia. “She’s a good filly, and
she took me to where I wanted to be. I wanted to get the jump on the
other horses, and that’s what happened. When I asked her, she just took
off.”
Up In Time returned mutuels of $12.40, $6 and $4.20. Celestial
Kitten paid $7 and $3.80. The show price on 9-2 second choice Bauble
Queen, ridden by Joe Talamo, was $4.
Up In Time began her career in England last year while winning 1 of 3 starts before being sent to the United States where she has captured 3 of 7 outings. With the Ramser’s winning purse of $60,000, her career earnings became $198,576.
