The last-place finish from Lava Man in Sunday's Grade 2 San Gabriel Handicap at Santa Anita did little to clarify his status as the senior member of the Southern California handicap division. The seven-time Grade 1 winner made his first start in 18 months in the San Gabriel, after undergoing stem cell therapy to regenerate cartilage in an ankle.
