Peacock Racing Stables’ Gunnevera, who will bypass the Belmont Stakes after competing in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1), is being given a breather at Gulfstream Park West.
“He’s doing very good, very good. He’ll start galloping this week,” said trainer Antonio Sano, whose multiple graded stakes-winning trainee finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Preakness over wet tracks. “He’ll have his first breeze probably in three weeks.”
Sano is targeting the $600,000 Jim Dandy (G2) at Saratoga July 29 for Gunnevera’s next start.
Gunnevera captured the Saratoga Special (G2) last summer before concluding his juvenile campaign with a victory in the Delta Downs Jackpot (G3). The son of Dialed In prepared for this year’s Triple Crown campaign with a second-place finish in the Holy Bull (G2), a convincing victory in the Fountain of Youth (G2) and a third-place finish in the Florida Derby (G1).
