Sandman seeks more Kentucky Derby points in Street Sense

Sandman continues his journey on the road to the Kentucky Derby as the headliner in the 12th running of the Grade 3, $200,000 Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs on Sunday, opening day of the 26-day fall meet.

The 1 1/16-mile contest for 2-year-olds is part of the road to the Kentucky Derby and offers the top five finishers points on a 10-5-3-2-1 scale toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 3.

The Street Sense will go as Race 10 of 11 on Sunday’s card First post is set for 1 p.m. EDT, with the Street Sense slated to go at 5:25 p.m.

Trained by Mark Casse, Sandman broke his maiden in his second start, winning by 1 1/4 lengths at Saratoga on Aug. 10 and earning a solid 90 Brisnet Speed Rating. The Tapit colt followed that performance with a fifth-place finish in the Iroquois Stakes (G3), the first leg of the road to the Kentucky Derby.

A $1.2 million OBS March sale purchase, Sandman is owned by D. J. Stable, St. Elias Stable, West Point Thoroughbreds and CJ Stables. He will be ridden in the Street Sense by Kentucky Derby 150-winning jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. and will break from post No. 4.

Among Sandman’s rivals entered in the Street Sense are Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile winner Tiztastic; Breeders’ Futurity (GI) fourth-place finisher Dapper Moon and recent Keeneland maiden special weight winner Bracket Buster.
