Del Mar fair odds: San Clemente is the best bet of the weekend
We have a big chance to begin the Del Mar meeting with a bang Saturday. Iscreamuscream looks to be a strong value play stretching out when she makes her stakes debut in the Grade 2 San Clemente at 9:14 p.m. EDT.
The undefeated Twirling Candy filly has won both her career starts by a combined six lengths, a decent total considering each race was a six-furlong turf sprints. She faces 11 other sophomore fillies Saturday in the one-mile, two-turn grass test, the opening-day feature where the turf meets the surf.
The favorite is another undefeated filly in Medoro, although she holds a decided class edge over our pick. She won won a trio of stakes following her maiden score, including two at this distance and a graded-stakes triumph.
Still, the reality from where I type is that both Brisnet Speed Ratings and Ragozin Speed Figures say that Iscreamuscream has run faster races. Obviously, stretching out and two turns are variables in play, but considering we're getting the longer price of the two, she is the clear choice for me.
Unfortunately, Medoro does make a lot of sense against the rest of the field, so this is not a race I am excited about from a vertical standpoint. It's a win bet on Iscreamuscream, and a stone-cold single in all the multi-race wagers.
