Salutos Amigos Attempts to Extend Streak in Toboggan
Following consecutive victories in the Grade 3 Fall Highweight Handicap on November 27 and the Gravesend on December 26, Salutos Amigos will attempt to extend his winning streak facing four contenders in Saturday's $150,000 Grade 3 Toboggan at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Owned
and trained by David Jacobson in partnership with Southern Equine
Stable, the son of Salute the Sarge has an impressive three wins from
four starts at Aqueduct and enters the Tobaggan after receiving a
career-high 109 Beyer Speed Figure in the Gravesend.
"He
certainly has a good record at Aqueduct but more importantly I think
he's a solid racehorse that runs good on any track," said Jacobson. "He
ran especially well in California [Breeders' Cup Sprint] to only lose
less than three lengths. He's doing very good coming into this race. He
will probably sit off the pace like he usually does, but I'll leave that
up to Irad [jockey] on where he will be."
Salutos
Amigos stands at even money as the morning-line favorite with Irad
Ortiz, Jr. in the irons, leaving from post position 5.
Mewannarose,
trained by Chris Englehart for William Fuccillo, will try to make the
third time the charm after running second to Salutos Amigos in both the
Gravesend and Fall Highweight. The 5-year-old gelding traveled wide in
both of those trips, and has the benefit of reuniting with jockey
Cornelio Velasquez who guided Mewannarose to win an optional claiming
race on September 12, 2013 at Belmont Park.
Mewannarose departs from post 6 and is 5-1 on the morning-line.
Trainer
Rudy Rodriguez enters Dads Caps for owner Vincent Scuderi. After
finishing third in the Gravesend to Salutos Amigos and Mewannarose, Dads
Caps looks to return to his best efforts that include a second-place
finish in the Grade 1 Vosburgh last fall, when he lost by a neck.
At 5-2 on the morning-line, Dads Caps will leave from post 3 with jockey Jose Ortiz aboard.
Rounding
out the field are Crafty Dreamer for trainer James Iselin and
Doubledown Again for trainer Michelle Nevin. Crafty Dreamer last out
finished second in the Hollie Hughes Stakes at Aqueduct on January 18
traveling three-wide most of the way. Doubledown Again will be making
his first career stakes start after having won an optional claiming race
on a sloppy Big A track on December 10.
