S. S. Stone Beats Jackson Bend

S. S. Stone, aways well placed under Julien Leparoux, kicked clear in the lane to beat Jackson Bend by two lengths in the 24th running of the Grade 3 Skip Away Stakes at Gulfstream Park on April 3.

Solid 2-1 favorite Colizeo set the pace for six furlongs but S. S. Stone was never father than a 1/2 length back in second. The latter surged to the lead around the far turn and had plenty left in the talk to hold off fellow stalker Jackson Bend.

Colizeo finished a clear 3rd and was followed by Ron The Greek, Drosselmeyer, Jardim, Moe Man, Gabriel's Hill, Our Dark Knight, Wingedlie, and King Ghidorah.

The winner, trained by Nick Zito for Robert LaPenta, paid $12.60 to win and topped a $68.60 exacta. The final time for the 1-3/16ths journey was 1:55.73.
