Ruis points Bolt d'Oro to Pacific Classic, Pegasus World Cup
Similar to last fall, when Mick Ruis called for a run at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, two preps and entry to the Kentucky Derby, the owner and trainer of Bolt d’Oro has plotted out the rest of his colt’s racing career.
Ruis told the San Diego Union-Tribune that Del Mar’s Grade 1 Pacific Classic run Aug. 18 against older horses is the main goal for Bolt d’Oro, who chased the pace on his way to 12th-place Derby finish over the weekend.
The son of Medaglia d’Oro will first receive some time off, then could return in a race such as the July 14 Indiana Derby or July 28 Jim Dandy at Saratoga.
Bolt d’Oro wore Spendthrift Farm’s orange and purple silks in the Kentucky Derby, a gift of sorts from Ruis to B. Wayne Hughes, who purchased a portion of breeding rights for the horse, who’s already a multiple Grade 1 winner.
According to the Union-Tribune, Ruis has acquired a starting spot in Gulfstream Park’s $16 million Pegasus World Cup with the Jan. 26 race expected to be his last before retirement.
