The rising Phoenix Thoroughbreds group -- also owner of Belmont Stakes runner-up Gronkowski -- struck in their white silks, marked with orange stars, as Signora Cabello scored a narrow victory over Gossamer Wings and Shades of Blue in a three-way photo. Trainer Wesley Ward entered with victories in this five-furlong sprint two of the last three years, but his Chelsea Cloisters, an eight-length debut winner at Keeneland, was slow from the gate and didn't fire as the 2-1 favorite in a field of 22 juvenile fillies.
Signora Cabello: $68.20 / $14.60
Gossamer Wings: $15.40
Shades of Blue: $4.20
Exacta: $789.40
Trifecta: $12,341.70
Nelson broke away from the pack early and seemed to set up his stablemates as trainer Aidan O'Brien runners crossed the wire 1-2-3 with Kew Gardens the winner. Southern France got up late for the place over Nelson, who stayed well late despite setting a more-than-modest pace in the 1 3/4-mile feature. "Delighted with them," O'Brien said.
Kew Gardens: $8.20 / $3.20
Southern France:$3.20
Nelson: $3.20
Exacta: $19.80
Trifecta: $52.40
Under jockey William Buick, who scored a victory Tuesday at Ascot, Aljazzi did one better on last year's runner-up finish in this race by looking much the best from off the pace. The victory earned trainer Marco Botti his first Ascot win, with this race run at a mile. Tribute Act ran second with Wilamina third of 11. The favorite, Hydrangea, appeared well positioned just off the pace but came up empty when the real running began.
Aljazzi: $10.60 / $3.20
Tribute Act: $5.60
Wilamina: $4.20
Exacta: $51.30
Trifecta: $270.80
Just before the Prince of Wales's, trainer John Gosden said 1-5 favorite Cracksman would likely deliver his best performance of 2018 in the fall. So they settled for second on Wednesday with Poet's Word having tracked down Cracksman in the 1 1/4-mile test that also served as a "Win and You're In" toward the Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs. The victory made Sir Michael Stoute the winningest trainer in Royal Ascot history with 76 scores. Hawkbill was third in the field of seven.
Poet's Word: $13.20 / $4
Cracksman: $2.20
Exacta: $9.80
Trifecta: $49.50
Settle for Bay, wearing a No. 21 saddle towel rarely seen in the U.S., prevailed from a field of 31 to win this straight mile race. Entries included one from The Queen, Her Majesty, in Seniority, as well as Master Merion, who gained attention with the wife of top professional golfer Justin Rose his owner.
Settle for Bay: $50.60 / $11.40
Afaak: $2.20
Circus Couture: $93.20
Expert Eye emerged late to win this one for the 3-year-olds, giving Stoute his 77th Royal Ascot winner. Could It Be Love looked like a winner until tiring in the final two furlongs, caught late by Society Power. American runner Hemp Hemp Hurray, for Ward and owners Sarah and Ken Ramsey, didn't factor. American Pharoah's full brother, St. Patrick's Day, was declared but scratched from his anticipated 3-year-old debut for new trainer Aidan O'Brien.
Expert Eye: $20 / $7.40
Society Power: $5.80
Could It Be Love: $4.80
Exacta: $91.10
Trifecta: $765.20
