Chesham Stakes (9:30 a.m.)
After losing his dam at birth in 2016, Arthur Kitt followed in her footsteps by running down the far rail to win the Chesham Stakes. The colt’s dam, Ceiling Kitty, won the 2012 Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot with trainer Thomas Dascombe, who also conditions Arthur Kitt. Dascombe teamed with jockey Richard Kingscote for the Chesham win, the same jockey aboard Ceiling Kitty for her Ascot victory.
Arthur Kitt: $16.00 / $4.60
Nate the Great: $6.20
Duke of Hazzard: $9.00
Exacta: $86.80
Trifecta: $1,830.60
G2 Hardwicke Stakes (10:05 a.m.)
Crystal Ocean stalked Idaho and easily responded to jockey Ryan Moore in the homestretch. The son of Sea the Stars powered to the front as Idaho faded, giving Sir Michael Stoute, the trainer with the most Royal Ascot wins, his 11th Hardwicke Stakes. Red Verdon made a run at Crystal Ocean, but the winner was too hard to catch. Cliffs of Moher was up for third in the field of five. The Hardwicke was also the fourth win of the week for both Moore and Stoute.
Crystal Ocean: $2.60 / $2.20
Red Verdon: $13.20
Exacta: $19.60
Trifecta: $69.70
Windsor Castle Stakes (10:40 a.m.)
Soldier’s Call emerged from a field of 28 young horses to give trainer Archie Watson his first Royal Ascot win. The 2-year-old Showcasing colt broke close to the grandstand rail under jockey Daniel Tudhope. When the pair got rolling, Sabre was on their heels, but Soldier’s Call held on to win. Dom Carlos ran late to catch third.
Soldier’s Call: $51.80 / $10.20
Sabre: $12.20
Dom Carlos: $14.60
Exacta: $386.60
G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (11:20 a.m.)
With excitement from start to finish, Merchant Navy got the head bob over City Light in Saturday’s feature, earning a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs in November. Harry Angel broke last after kicking in the stalls while the American entrant Bound for Nowhere, last out winner of the Grade 2 Shakertown Stakes, separated from the field to take the lead. Bound for Nowhere drifted toward Coolmore’s Merchant Navy as the latter came running. City Light also made his move, with the American horse in between him and the eventual winner. Merchant Navy stuck his nose in front for trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore.
Merchant Navy: $9.40 / $3.20
City Light: $8.00
Bound for Nowhere: $6.00
Exacta: $65.20
Trifecta: $672.40
Wokingham Stakes (12:00 p.m.)
A field of 28 crowded the course for this handicap, with Bacchus getting up over Dreamfield in the final strides. Nice way to end a layoff. Undrafted, a previous Ascot winner still going at age 8, did not factor in the six-furlong event.
Bacchus: $159.80 / $32
Dreamfield: $2.04
Major Jumbo: $33.40
Exacta: $165.80
The finale featured 16 runners going 2 3/4 miles, and Pallasator perhaps ran a few steps farther than that. The horse swerved in the stretch but straightened before the finish to win it.
Pallasator: $12.40 / $4.80
Renneti: $25.40
Count Octave: $3.80
Exacta: $258.80
Trifecta: $1,916.50
