Accidental Agent emerged from a slew of horses spread across the track to win going a straight mile in the opener, also a "Win and You're In" toward the Breeders' Cup Mile. He was off at 41-1 on the U.S. tote and 33-1 in England, making him the highest-priced winner ever of the Queen Anne. He did so running from off the pace. Lord Glitters ran second with Lightning Spear third.
Yoshida, the Bill Mott trainee campaigned by most of Justify's connections -- WinStar Farm, China Horse Club and Head of Plains Partners -- had a nice showing to finish fifth in the field of 15. Jockey Jose Ortiz was up.
As for the U.S. payouts...
Accidental Agent: $84.80 / $20.20
Lord Glitters: $10.60
Lightning Spear: $6
Exacta: $974
Trifecta: $6,692.30
In a race devoid of American runners, a big favorite lived up to his billing in familiar colors. Juddmonte Farm's Calyx topped a field of 24 juveniles, off at 8-5 on the board for trainer John Gosden. It was an especially impressive victory given Calyx drew clear from his pack of horses on the near side of the course. All the other top finishers were on the far side, suggesting the going may have been better there. Advertise was second with Sergei Prokofiev third.
Calyx: $5.40 / $2.80
Advertise: $7.20
Sergei Prokofiev: $3.60
Extacta $28.40
Trifecta: $103.10
In a race thought to be between two-time Ascot winner Lady Aurelia and Battaash, the two may have gone a bit too fast early on in the five-furlong sprint, with John Velazquez in to ride Lady Aurelia. That made way for a rallying Blue Point to win it for Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby. The Indiana-bred Bucchero, the other American interest in the race, ran a big race at long odds to get edged out of fourth. He went off at 28-1 even on the U.S. tote.
Blue Point: $15.60 / $4.60
Battaash: $2.80
Mabs Cross: $10.00
Exacta: $24.70
Trifecta: $308
Without Parole, an undefeated 3-year-old colt, remained such by holding off a late-running Gustav Klimt going the round mile. A son of Frankel, Without Parole was bred and is owned by John Gunther, who also bred Triple Crown winner Justify. Threeandfourpence, who was considered for the Belmont Stakes, set the pace before fading down the lane.
Without Parole: $6 / $2.80
Gustav Klimt: $4.80
Wooton: $5.40
Exacta: $20.30
Trifecta: $163.50
The 2 1/2-mile marathon represented a steep drop in class from races earlier on the program but made for a nice betting race. Lagostovegas, at 12-1, stormed down the center of the track. It gave trainer Willie Mullins his fourth victory in this race and sixth overall at Ascot.
Lagostovegas: $27.40 / $5.40
Dubawi Fifty: $4.20
Stratum: $6.20
Exacta: $93.90
Trifecta: $1,100.70
They ended the afternoon going 1 1/4 miles on turf, and Frankie Dettori finished a big day in style, riding Monarchs Glen to his third victory on the card. Dettori also rode Coventry winner Calyx and St. James's Palace hero Without Parole. John Gosden trains. "Three rides, three winners on the first day at Ascot. Wow," Dettori said.
Monarchs Glen: $15.80 / $5.80
Euginio: $19.60
Muntahaa: $19.80
Exacta: $311.30
Trifecta: $13,038.70
