Rob Dolan wins Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge
Going all in on an exacta combining Sovereignty with The Puma in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Rob Dolan of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., finished in first place in the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge last weekend, finishing with total winnings of $625,794 from a bankroll of $140,694 and $485,100 in prize money.
The 18th annual Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge, Thoroughbred racing’s biggest live-money tournament, was held Oct. 30-31 and drew a record 693 entries, a 7.7% increase in participation over 2025. Horseplayers took on the challenge of wagering on the Breeders’ Cup two-day program at Keeneland.
“It’s exciting and surprising,” said the 45-year-old Dolan, who was playing in his second BCBC. “A lot of my top choices did not win or were running out of the money, so to amass a sizeable bankroll was rather crazy.”
Dolan, who played the races at Saratoga in the picnic area for a number of years, did not get involved in tournament play until 2025 after seeing a television interview with Matt Miller, author and winner of the 2021 BCBC. Miller finished third in this year’s BCBC.
Mired in mid-pack of the standings going into the Classic, Dolan made a $4,495 cold exacta on the 9-5 second choice, Sovereignty, and 17-1 The Puma. On his second entry, he also made a $10,541 win bet on The Puma.
“Sovereignty was the most likely winner but The Puma was the value bet,” Dolan recalled. “It was a way to emphasize an opinion, and if Sovereignty was going to be Sovereignty I could still possibly win.”
Dolan finished with a total score of 140,694 points and combined those earnings with his first-place prize of $485,100 for the $625,794 total. Clay Sanders of Memphis, Tenn., finished second with 130,847 points, and combined with his second prize of $323,400, his total earnings were $454,247. Miller, from Northbrook, Ill., finished in third place with $125,201, and combined with his third prize of $173,250 gave him total earnings of $298,451.
The tournament players generated $9,474,480 in wagering handle. Breeders’ Cup tournament wagering at Keeneland totaled 26.9% of the on-track handle.
In the 2026 BCBC, each player was required to fund a $2,500 buy-in and a $7,500 betting bankroll ($10,000 total). All buy-in monies were applied to the prize pool, making a record total prize pool of $1,732,500. Players made real wagers (win, place, show, exacta, trifecta and daily double) with their $7,500 bankroll over the two days (22 races) and kept all monies earned from their wagering.?
