Ride On Curlin worked seven furlongs in 1:29.60 Saturday morning in preparation for the $100,000 Essex Handicap Feb. 14. The Curlin colt breezed after the renovation break under regular exercise rider Bryan Beccia. Working from the six-furlong pole to the seventh-eighths pole, Ride On Curlin recorded splits of :24.60, :36.60, :49.40 and 1:15.40 for three-quarters.
Trainer Billy Gowan said Jon Court will have the mount on Ride On Curlin for the 1 1/16-mile Essex. Court guided Ride On Curlin, runner-up in last year’s Arkansas Derby and Preakness, to a head victory in his 4-year-old debut Jan. 15.
I Spent It Update
Trainer Tony Dutrow said he believes I Spent It, among the country’s top 2-year-olds last year, is about two weeks away from his first breeze of the year.
“I think that’s being conservative,” Dutrow said Saturday morning.
I Spent It hasn’t started since finishing last of six in the $500,000 Champagne Stakes (G1) Oct. 4 at Belmont Park. The colt, the first winner sired by 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, came out of the Champagne with a small bone chip in a knee, which Dutrow said was surgically removed.
Dutrow and co-owner Alex Lieblong said I Spent It could make his 3-year-old debut in the $750,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) March 14 or the $100,000 Gazebo Stakes March 21. The Rebel, the final major local prep for the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) April 11, is 1 1/16 miles. The Gazebo is six furlongs.
I Spent It won 2 of 4 starts last year, including the $200,000 Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) in August at Saratoga.
Lieblong, a member of the Arkansas Racing Commission, and his wife JoAnn own I Spent It in partnership with Three Chimneys Farm.
Finish Lines
Trainer Tony Dutrow said Grade I winner The Big Beast is scheduled to make his 4-year-old debut around March 1, a comeback race that will serve as a prep for the $300,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) April 9. The $100,000 Hot Springs Stakes is March 7. The Big Beast hasn’t started since winning the $500,000 King’s Bishop Stakes (G1) in August at Saratoga after having a tiny bone chip removed from an ankle. … Arkansas Derby candidate The Truth Or Else breezed a half-mile in :49.20 Saturday morning in preparation for his 3-year-old debut. Trainer Kenny McPeek said the $750,000 Rebel (G2) March 14 is the first major target. … Pippin winner Mufajaah worked 5 furlongs in 1:03.20 Saturday morning in preparation for the $100,000 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) Feb. 15.
