Requite set for Gulfstream return Sunday

Limestone Thoroughbreds’ Requite is scheduled to put his undefeated Gulfstream record on the line in Sunday’s Opening Lead, a six-furlong overnight handicap for 3-year-olds and up.

Trained by George Weaver, the 5-year-old son of Warrior’s Reward won three races during the spring meets at Gulfstream the past two years. He came off a long layoff to win back-to-back races in 2015, including the Big Cypress Handicap, before finishing second in the Amsterdam (G2) at Saratoga. The Kentucky-bred sprinter returned from a 10-month layoff to the Parrot Key by 3 ½ lengths in 1:09.18 for six furlongs last year. He subsequently ran off the board in the Vanderbilt (G1) and went to the sidelines.

Requite will attempt to fire fresh for the third consecutive year at Gulfstream Sunday while carrying highweight of 123 pounds, including jockey Tyler Gaffalione.

Antonio Sano-trained Coronado Again, an impressive 6 ¾-length winner of six-furlong optional claiming allowance in 1:09.72 May 12, looms as a strong contender in a race that also attracted Adagio, Easy to Say, Focus on Me and Enders Cat.

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 at Gulfstream Park went unsolved for the 19th consecutive program Thursday, producing a $356,270.15 carryover jackpot for Friday’s nine-race program.

Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $3,595.98 Thursday.

The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket sold, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Friday’s Rainbow 6 will span Races 4-9.

The sequence kicks off with a $50,000 maiden special weight event for 2-year-old fillies that attracted two debuting daughters of Malibu Moon. Mark Casse-trained Capetown Lady, who was bought for $300,000 by John C. Oxley at the 2016 Keeneland September sale, will be ridden by Edgard Zayas, while Anthony Crastus has the mount aboard Patrick Biancone-trained Kathy’s Clown, who was purchased for $200,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida 2-year-olds-in-training sale at Gulfstream in March for $200,000 by Linda Shanahan.

There will also be a $1 Super Hi-5 carryover of $1945.24 for Friday’s first race.
