Reports: Trio of updates on the Pegasus World Cup field

Three developments over the last 24 hours have led to further clarification on which horses will enter the Grade 1, $9 million Pegasus World Cup set for Jan. 26 at Gulfstream Park.

• The Daily Racing Form's Marty McGee reports that Clark Handicap (G1) winner Leofric is no longer under consideration due to a quarter crack developed since the Nov. 23 race. A 6-year-old son of Candy Ride, Leofric worked twice at Fair Grounds, most recently on Dec. 22, before Cox backed off.

• DRF also confirmed that Tom's d'Etat, the recent winner of Fair Grounds' Tenacious Stakes, has been pre-entered for the Pegasus. The lightly raced Al Stall trainee has won his last four starts in a streak that dates back to June. Given this begins his 6-year-old season, owner G M B is taking a shot while they have him healthy.

• The Thoroughbred Daily News' Bill Finley reported that while connections to recent Malibu Stakes (G1) winner McKinzie are interested in running in the Pegasus, they are without a spot in the field. The Pegasus is limited to 12 starters with cost to enter $500,000 apiece, though those slots can be rented out.

"If he’s doing really well and an available spot comes up, we’ll go," trainer Bob Baffert told Finley. "If there’s not a slot available for him we’re not going to worry about it.”
