West Will Power, winner of the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Stakes on July 1, was retired after sustaining a soft-tissue injury.

Daily Racing Form reported that injury was detected after the 6-year-old son of Bernardini worked five furlongs at Saratoga on Saturday.

Trainer Brad Cox told DRF that there would not be enough time for him to make the Breeder's Cup and that "with what he has already accomplished in his racing career," owners Gary and Mary West decided to retire him to stud.

West Will Power earned an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic with his win as the favorite in the Stephen Foster.

Bred by the Wests and initially trained by Kelly Breen, West Will Power was transferred to Cox before the 2022 season and had two wins and two seconds from four starts last year.

This year, he has a record of 4: 2-1-1, with his other win coming in the New Orleans Classic (G2).

Overall, he has a record of 17: 7-7-1 and earnings of $1,745,390.
