Report: Trakus will end operations this weekend
Trakus will discontinue its timing and tracking system this weekend, Daily Racing Form reported.
Company chairman Barry Weisbord told DRF that Equibase offers a lower-cost service, "and we couldn’t make it work It was costing us a fortune and we were just losing money. There was no path forward."
Many tracks that used Trakus will switch to the Equibase GPS system, which was created Total Performance Data, a London-based company.
Weisbord told DRF that Equibase was given the opportunity to take over Trakus but declined.
Tracks that use Equibase GPS for tracking and/or timing include Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita, Golden Gate, Laurel Park Del Mar, Turfway Park, Lone Star, Turfway and Woodbine, according to the report.
The New York Racing Association had been using Trakus at its tracks but will switch to E-GPS for tracking and will retain a beam system for timing, according to the report.
The E-GPS system initially reported inaccurate times, according to the report, but Equibase has been making improvements, including using E-GPS as the tracking system and a beam instrument to record final times.
