Longtime Louisiana trainer Morris Nicks died Thursday at age 74, the Daily Racing Form reported. He had been battling cancer.

He began training in 1976 and won 819 races from 5,205 starts. Nicks had two graded-stakes victories: the 2004 Oaklawn Breeders' Cup Stakes (G3) with Golden Sonata and the 1999 Aristides Handicap with Run Johnny. His career earnings totaled $15.7 million.
He also was a mentor to his son, Ralph Nicks, who trained champion Caledonia Road, according to the DRF report.
