Report: Trainer Gyarmati surrenders license as stalls are revoked
Leah Gyarmati surrendered her license to train in New York and had her Belmont Park stalls revoked by the New York Racing Association.
Daily Racing Form reported that the actions came after an incident that involved alcohol and another involved alleged lack of attention to an injured horse.
Gyarmati surrendered her license on Friday. "I didn't have a choice," she told DRF.
Her 12 horses in training were transferred to Marcelo Arenas, her former assistant.
Gyarmati told DRF she failed a Breathalyzer test when she was found asleep in her truck at Belmont Park after training hours. She said she had had a sandwich and two beers and was napping. As directed by state officials, she met with a substance-abuse counselor and is awaiting a report.
Regarding the inured horse, Gyarmati told DRF one of her horses was lame after training and was brought back to the barn by the exercise rider and a stable employee. She said she returned to the barn after watching other horses train and that the horse was being examined by a veterinarian.
NYRA said Gyarmati was not there the day of the injury but was there the next morning when the veterinarian was doing a follow-up examination, according to the report.
The trainer told DRF the horse had a screw inserted to repair a fractured cannon bone and is convalescing on a farm.
"I've never been neglectful of my horses," Gyarmati told DRF.
