Report: Top Canadian jockey Da Silva retiring by year's end
Jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva, Woodbine's leading rider the last four seasons, told the Toronto Sun he plans to retire when the Canadian track's meet ends Dec. 15.
The 44-year-old from Brazil has won six Sovereign Awards as Outstanding Jockey north of the border and counts among his top horses Pink Lloyd, the champion sprinter, as well as two Queen's Plate winners.
Da Silva said his retirement will be about neither the risks of his craft or money, but family -- particularly spending more time with his wife and two children.
“I grew up without family pretty much,” Da Silva told the Toronto Sun. “I don’t want that to happen to my kids. These days are long hours, and I’m tired.”
According to Equibase, Da Silva entered this week with 2,176 victories on horses that have earned more than $98 million.
