Report: Tampa Bay Derby-winning jockey Luhr dies at 67

Jockey Rick Luhr, who won the 1982 Tampa Bay Derby with Reinvested, has died at the age of 67.

Luhr began his career in 1976 at Thistledown and continued to ride until a series of injuries ended his career in 1988. During that time, he mainly rode at Tampa Bay Downs, Rockingham Park and Suffolk Downs, with seasons at tracks including Keystone, River Downs, Latonia and Birmingham as well. His death, reportedly after suffering a heart attack, was reported by Lynne Snierson at BloodHorse.

In his career Luhr won 760 of 6,184 races for total earnings of $3,757,125. In 1982, Luhr rode Stanley Hough trainee Reinvested to victory in the second-ever edition of the Tampa Bay Derby. Reinvested would go on to finish third behind Gato del Sol, with Don MacBeth in the irons. Another one of his best horses was Ridan Clarion, who won both the Mr. Prospector Stakes and the Super Bowl Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in 1984 with Luhr in the saddle.
