Report: Sutherland gets 6-day riding suspension in Dubai
Jockey Chantal Sutherland, who resumed her career in Dubai this winter, reportedly was suspended six days for a careless ride Friday.
Sutherland rode 6-year-old gelding Poster Paint inward and out in the homestretch of a 1 1/4-mile, $48,000 turf handicap at Meydan, according to race charts. Paulick Report said Sutherland’s move led to a series of adjustments affecting four horses. Poster Paint ended up finishing sixth in the 16-horse race that was marred by an unrelated spill a furlong earlier.
Sutherland is serving her suspension from Sunday through Friday, according to Paulick Report. She decided not to appeal.
Twice a champion apprentice jockey in Canada, Sutherland missed about 1 1/2 years of racing because of a serious arm injury she suffered in May 2023 at Gulfstream Park. She has been riding in Dubai for trainer Bhupat Seemar.
Sutherland, who turns 49 next Sunday, was the first female jockey to take part in the Grade 1 Dubai World Cup, riding Game On Dude to a 12th-place finish in 2012.
