Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer will take a break of at least 60 days, trainer Michael McCarthy told the Daily Racing Form.

Last seen finishing third in the Belmont Stakes, the Twirling Candy colt had been working at Santa Anita as recently as July 9.

McCarthy told DRF, "He just hasn’t been as sharp coming out of the Belmont. We didn’t think the right thing to do was push it. He’s done a lot for us. We’ll do whatever he needs.”

Owned by John and Diane Fradkin, Rombauer has raced four time this year, starting with a win in the listed El Camino Real and then a third-place finish in the Bluegrass Stakes (G2) in April. McCarthy noted that his seven career races have been at six tracks.

McCarthy told DRF that Rombauer will return to training in the fall and will point to early 2022 races such as the Saudi Cup and Dubai World Cup (G1).
