Report: Remsen Stakes winner Maximus Mischief retired
Maximus Mischief, the Remsen Stakes (G2) winner who entered his 3-year-old season unbeaten and a Kentucky Derby hopeful, has retired, Dick Jerardi reports for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
A son of Into Mischief trained by Butch Reid for Cash is King LLC and LC racing, Maximus Mischief exited his only career defeat -- and final start in the Gulfstream Park's Holy Bull (G2) -- with a soft tissue injury.
"After speaking with several vets, it is very unlikely that he will race again at the elite level that we recently witnessed," Cash is King's Chuck Zacney told the Inquirer. "Therefore, we will be retiring him.” Zacney added that connections have received calls from "several" breeding operations in Kentucky about a stud deal. Maximus Mischief won his first two Parx Racing starts by 8 3/4 lengths and six lengths, respectively, then progressed to a front-running victory in Aqueduct's Remsen that ranked him among the early Derby favorites. In the Holy Bull, Maximus Mischief appeared to need the race, finishing third as the pace collapsed. Reid then sidelined the colt as he worked flat up to the Fountain of Youth (G2). Maximus Mischief, a former $340,000 purchase as a 2-year-old, won three of four starts with earnings of $225,700.
