Report: Record-breaker Munnys Gold is aimed at Eight Belles
Munnys Gold, the undefeated 3-year-old filly who set a track record Sunday at Tampa Bay Downs, will start next in the Grade 2 Eight Belles on Kentucky Oaks day at Churchill Downs.
Trainer Todd Pletcher said Sunday he was considering the seven-furlong sprint for the Munnings filly, and Daily Racing Form reported Monday that this is the plan after she came out of her race "in good shape."
Munnys Gold is 3-for-3 after her 17 1/4-length victory Sunday in the black-type Sophomore Fillies Stakes at Tampa Bay, covering the seven furlongs in 1:20.09.
The previous track record was 1:20.89, set in the 2019 Pasco Stakes by Win Win Win as a 4-year-old.
She earned a 106 Beyer Speed Figure, which was the highest by a 3-year-old of either sex this year, according to DRF.
Munnys Gold broke her maiden in her first start with a 14 1/2-length victory at Monmouth Park in June. Her next race was a January allowance at Gulfstream Park, which she won by 6 1/4 lengths.
Owned by Lawana and Robert Low, she was purchased as a yearling for $300,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky select yearling sale in 2021.
