Planetario, who was expected to start in the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap on Sunday, was retired after an injury.

Trainer Richard Mandella told Daily Racing Form that after an Aug. 19 work at Del Mar, the 6-year-old was found to have a slight tear in a suspensory ligament.

Bred in Brazil, Planetario started his career by going 4-for-8 in his home country. He made his first U.S. start in an optional-claiming allowance, finishing fifth, in June 2022. He then raced in 10 graded stakes, winning the San Juan Capistrano (G3) this year and last and the Hollywood Turf Cup (G2) in November.

He opened 2024 with second-place efforts in the San Marcos (G3) and San Luis Rey (G3) and then was third in the Charles Whittingham (G2).

Owned by Red Rafa Stud, he had a career record of 19: 8-3-1 and earnings of $390,548.

Mandella told DRF it was unclear where Planetario would spend his retirement.
