Report: Pennine Ridge winner A. P. Kid dies after training injury
A. P. Kid, who won the Pennine Ridge Stakes on June 7 at Saratoga, was euthanized after being injured in a work over the Oklahoma turf training course on Friday.
His death was reported by Mike Welsch of Daily Racing Form. Trainer Todd Pletcher told Welsch that he "took a funny step switching leads", which led to the injury. Pletcher told Welsch that he had been considering entering him in Friday's Belmont Derby (G1) before the injury.
A. P. Kid was a 3-year-old son of Honor A. P. out of the winning War Front mare Lady Mamba. He had a career record of 3: 2-0-0 and earnings of $207,700 for Pletcher and owner Donegal Racing.
He was sixth on debut over the Gulfstream Park dirt Feb. 15 behind eventual Preakness runner-up Gosger. He moved forward with a confident 2 1/2-length maiden win at 1 1/16 miles on the turf there March 22. A. P. Kid stepped up to stakes company June 7 for the Pennine Ridge. The race was originally slated for the grass, but Pletcher kept him in even though it was washed to the muddy dirt track. A. P. Kid stalked the pace and drew off to win by 6 1/4 lengths over favored Mi Bago.
