Report: O'Neill's Vitruvian Man will run in Belmont Stakes
Vitruvian Man, last seen finishing third in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, will run in next Saturday's Belmont Stakes for trainer Doug O'Neill, David Grening of Daily Racing Form reported.
The Santa Anita Derby has been the only start this year for the Vino Rosso colt. He broke his maiden at Keeneland in October in his third try, then was second in a starter allowance at Churchill Downs in November and third in an optional-claiming allowance at Turfway Park in December.
“He’s always shown a lot of talent, he was just a little slow to come around,” O’Neill told DRF. “He’s training well.”
A homebred for Glenn Sorgenstein WC Racing, Vitruvian Man has been working at Santa Anita this spring, most recently going six furlongs from the gate in 1:13.60 on May 20.
The addition of Vitruvian Man brings the probable Belmont field to 10 after confirmation Wednesday that Chip Honcho and Potente will not run in the third leg of the Triple Crown.
