Report: Mychel Sanchez puts fellow rider 1st at Parx
Mychel Sanchez took his mount out of the running in a race Wednesday at Parx to help fellow rider Abner Adorno.
Paulick Report explained that the rein broke on jockey Abner Adorno's mount, Sole Lute, in the seventh race, a maiden special weight at one mile on the main turf. The 3-year-old colt bolted through the field to the outside rail.
Sanchez told Paulick Report that he heard Adorno yelling behind him.
"We were screaming to the outrider, but they couldn’t act on time or didn’t see what I saw," Sanchez said. "I had to do something, not only because it was him, a great friend, husband and father, but I saw in his face how in trouble he was."
Sanchez moved his mount, Dark Devil, to the outside rail along the backstretch and helped to slow Sole Lute. He said they were able to pull up near the quarter pole.
Dark Devil was declared a nonstarter by the stewards.
