Mountaineer Park was found to be in line while dealing with the remains of a horse euthanized at the track and later photographed uncovered in a nearby landfill, the Daily Racing Form reported Tuesday.
Hancock County Sheriff's Office Sergent Doug Wade told DRF reporter Matt Hegarty that Mountaineer has so far been "cleared of any violations regarding the horse."
The horse in question, suggested by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as Bridget Maloney, suffered catastrophic injuries at the West Virginia racetrack on Sept. 25 and was humanely euthanized by a track veterinarian.
Wade told DRF that Mountaineer supplied requisite paperwork showing that treatment was performed for the horse and transportation to the landfill was provided.
While animal remains are supposed to be disposed of in a designated area, that did not happen in this case. In turn, PETA called upon the sheriff's office to investigate.
"It seems someone at the landfill that day directed the driver to that spot, and the driver did as he was told," Wade said, adding that he expects the case to close by the end of the week.
