Report: Mott says Sovereignty will skip Dubai World Cup
Sovereignty will not run in the Group 1 Dubai World Cup as trainer Bill Mott maps out his plan toward the 2026 Breeders' Cup Classic.
Mott told David Grening of Daily Racing Form that the 2025 horse of the year will return to work in "a couple of weeks" and so will not be ready for the March 28 Dubai World Cup.
Mott said he doesn't have a plan for the Into Mischief colt other than races that fit his goal of the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Sovereignty was scratched from the 2025 Classic because of a fever. And that might have spurred the decision by owner-breeder Godolphin to bring him back for a 4-year-old campaign.
“If he would have won the Breeders’ Cup it would have been more difficult to bring him back for a lot of different reasons,” Mott told DRF.
Sovereignty's races this summer could include the Whitney (G1) and Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), according to the report.
Mott told DRF that New York Racing Association officials asked his opinion about moving the Jockey Club Gold Cup back to Belmont Park and running it when the reopens Sept. 18 or 19 rather than a few weeks earlier as it has been run the last five years.
He said it would be a "perfect" move because it would be six weeks after the Whitney and six weeks ahead of the Breeders' Cup.
“Funny enough, I gave them my opinion without even thinking I had a horse for it,” Mott told DRF.
