Magnitude, impressive winner of the Grade 2 Risen Star at 43-1, is off the Kentucky Derby 2025 trail because of a bone chip.

Marcus Hersh of Daily Racing Form reported that the Not This Time colt trained by Steve Asmussen will have surgery on his left ankle Wednesday.

Asmussen told Hersh the surgery will be done by Dr. Larry Bramlage, with no timeframe for Magnitude's return until after a post-surgical assessment.

Magnitude jumped into second place on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 55 points after his gate-to-wire win in the Risen Star, and his Las Vegas odds shortened from 90-1 to 30-1.

Magnitude was bought by Winchell Thoroughbreds as a yearling for $450,000. He has a record of 7: 3-1-0 and earnings of $302,500. Before the Risen Star, he finished sixth in the Lecomte (G3) and second in the Gun Runner.

Asmussen has yet to win a Kentucky Derby. He finished second in 2022 with Epicenter, who also was owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds.
