Report: Laurel has video evidence of Crispin weight violation
Laurel Park has video evidence of a weight violation for which jockey Alexander Crispin was suspended, the Daily Racing Form reported.
Crispin, winner of the 2020 Eclipse Award as top apprentice jockey, was suspended for 30 days and fined $1,000 for riding at the wrong weight on Alpha Queue in the ninth race at Laurel Park on Jan. 16. Alpha Queue was disqualified.
Crispin weighed in at 115 pounds before the race and weighed out at 110, according to the DRF report, and both weighings were recorded on camera.
Maryland's chief state steward, Adam Campola, told DRF that Crispin did not provide an explanation for the discrepancy at a hearing last week.
Crispin is the leading jockey at Laurel Park this year, and stewards had spoken to him before the Jan. 16 race amid rumors that he might have been riding underweight, Campola said.
But the track did not have video evidence at the time, he said, because weighing stations were moved during the pandemic and did not have cameras aimed at them.
