Report: Kristin Mulhall shuts down her Santa Anita stable
Although she did not rule out a comeback, trainer Kristin Mulhall said Thursday she has shut down her stable at Santa Anita, Daily Racing Form reported Friday.
Mulhall, who will be 42 on Saturday, told DRF’s Steve Andersen “it’s not fun anymore.” She said she grew weary of growing pressure from veterinarians and regulators in Southern California.
“I tried to do what’s right by the horse,” she told Andersen. “I don’t feel I can do that with the different rules now. They’re basically training the horses now.”
Mulhall said she would redirect her energy toward building a horse farm she owns in central Ohio.
Since she started training in 2002, Mulhall had 3,168 starters with 421 winners and $18,516,374 in purse earnings, according to Equibase. She won nine graded stakes with five horses including Imperialism, Sky Cape, Puerto Banus, Tale of a Champion and Mister Acpen. Mulhall was one of only three women to train a top-three finisher in the Kentucky Derby when Imperialism finished third in 2004.
Most recently racing a horse on closing day June 16 at Santa Anita, Mulhall saddled what may have been her final winner June 13, when 8-year-old gelding Give Me the Lute in an allowance turf sprint.
Mulhall said she sold her Southern California home, and if she were to return to training, it might be in Kentucky.
