2005 Kentucky Oaks winner Summerly, 19, dies of colic
Summerly, winner of the 2005 Kentucky Oaks, died earlier this year of colic, the mare’s owner confirmed Tuesday to Horse Racing Nation.
The story was reported first Monday by The TwinSpires Edge.
Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds when she won the Oaks, she later was sold to WinStar Farm for $3.3 million in the 2006 Fasig-Tipton November sale.
“She was one of the prettiest mares we had on the farm,” Walden said in a text message to HRN. “While she didn’t reproduce herself, she always was a good mother, and it was a privilege to have a Kentucky Oaks winner in the broodmare band.”
Summerly, by Summer Squall out of the Mr. Prospector mare Here I Go, had a career record of 14: 6-1-2 and earnings of $907,652. Her other graded-stakes wins came in the 2005 Silverbullet Day (G3) and Fair Grounds Oaks (G2).
Her top progeny was the Group 3-placed Unbridled’s Song mare Allez Marie, dam of stakes winner Workaholic (by Sky Mesa), according to The TwinSpires Edge report. Her final foals are a yearling filly and a weanling colt by 2017 Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming.
