Report: Jockey Ortiz to miss Saudi Cup with broken wrist
Eclipse Award-winning jockey Jose Ortiz suffered a broken wrist Saturday, TVG's Gabby Gaudet reported, after the rider was tossed from first-time starter Atone prior to Gulfstream Park's third race.
Ortiz had walked the Godolphin homebred Atone on to the track for trainer Tom Albertrani when the Into Mischief colt bucked multiple times, finally throwing Ortiz to the dirt. Minutes later, Ortiz, whose goggles snapped in the incident, got a new pair and a leg up. Atone finished sixth in the seven-furlong race won by well-backed favorite Liam's Point.
Ortiz took off the rest of the card before TVG detailed his injury.
It's an untimely ailment that will prevent 2017's champion rider from heading overseas next weekend for the $20 million Saudi Cup, in which he was set to ride Tacitus in the colt's 4-year-old debut.
Entering Saturday, Ortiz ranked sixth in Gulfstream's jockey standings with 37 victories from 223 mounts. His brother, Irad Ortiz Jr., was the runaway leader with 98 winners so far during the Championship Meet.
