Jockey Jose Alvarez is sidelined after Sam Houston spill
Jockey Jose Alvarez could miss six to eight weeks after his leg was fractured in a spill Friday at Sam Houston Race Park.
Agent Monty Penney confirmed a Daily Racing Form report that Alvarez also fractured his wrist.
"He fractured his lower leg in two spots and his wrist," Penney told Horse Racing Nation on Monday. Alvarez was scheduled to see an orthopedic doctor Monday afternoon to determine whether he will need surgery, Penney said.
Alvarez was riding Made an Offer, a 4-year-old filly, in a 1 1/8-mile claiming race on turf when the accident occurred. According to the Equibase chart, they were in the lead on the rail when the filly "ducked out suddenly just past the six-furlong pole" and Alvarez was unseated.
She also "slammed into Country Slugger," according to the chart, and she was knocked off stride and threw her rider, Stewart Elliott.
Alvarez has a record this year of 101: 25-14-13 and is in third place in the jockey standings at Sam Houston Park.
