Report: Horse owner, activist Beverly Lewis dies at 90
On the heels of Secretariat owner Penny Chenery’s death, racing lost another of its leading ladies, BloodHorse.com reported Monday, with Beverly Lewis’ passing last week at age 90.
Per the report, Lewis, who with her husband, Bob, campaigned four classic race winners, suffered from an illness.
Among the Lewis’ great horses were Kentucky Derby winners Silver Charm and Charismatic; Preakness Stakes winner Timber Country; and Commendable, who won the Belmont.
Beverly and Bob Lewis in 1997 received the Eclipse Award of Merit for their accomplishments in the sport as owners, breeders and activists, as Beverly recently served on the Edwin J. Gregson Foundation board helping backstretch workers and their families.
Bob Lewis died in 2006 at age 81 and now has a 2-year-old Santa Anita Stakes named in her honor. The Beverly Lewis Stakes is run at Los Alamitos, also on the California circuit.
