Report: Grade 1 winner and California stallion Cistron dies
Grade 1 winner and California-based stallion Cistron has died due to complications from colic.
Cistron, a 10-year-old son of The Factor, was standing his third season at stud at Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif. His death was reported by Paulick Report.
Cistron showed versatility throughout his racing career, which ran from 2016 through 2021. He broke his maiden at a mile on the grass and finished third behind Frostmourne in the 2017 Penn Mile. However, he was also a potent dirt horse. He won the 1 1/16-mile Northern Spur at Oaklawn in 2017. As an older horse trained by John Sadler, he emerged as one of the better sprinters in California. All three of his graded victories, including in the 2019 Bing Crosby (G1), came at one turn on the dirt. He finished his career with a 30: 6-7-6 record and $768,719 in earnings.
The oldest foals by Cistron are a group of 12 yearlings. According to Jockey Club statistics, 18 mares went to him in 2023.
