Report: Grade 1 winner One in Vermillion is euthanized in Arizona
Grade 1 winner One in Vermillion reportedly was euthanized Friday after suffering from laminitis, his owner told Daily Racing Form.
Jonathan Kalman said the 4-year-old, California-bred colt sired by Army Mule had been under a veterinarian’s care in Phoenix since Dec. 27, when a farrier noticed an inflammation.
The winner of the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1) in his final race in August, One in Vermillion was a five-time stakes victor whose racing career ended with a fetlock injury during a November workout at Zia Park in New Mexico.
One in Vermillion had a career record of 12: 6-3-1 for trainer Esteban Martínez with earnings of $653,840, according to Equibase. He had stakes victories in 2022 at Turf Paradise in the 2022 Open Spring Futurity and the Lost in the Fog Juvenile. That year he went to Sunland Park and finished first in the Riley Allison Derby. As a 3-year-old in 2023, One in Vermillion was victorious in the Lazaro Barrera at Santa Anita before finishing his career triumphantly in the Jerkens Memorial.
