Kopion has been retired from racing after a fifth-place finish against males in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

The 4-year-old filly by Omaha Beach will be bred, according to a report in the Daily Racing Form.

“She came out of the race fine, but they’re going to breed her,” trainer Richard Mandella told the Daily Racing Form, referring to owner Spendthrift Farm.

Kopion is scheduled to ship from Del Mar to Santa Anita on Sunday and fly to Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky on Tuesday.

Bred by Tall Oaks Farm, Kopion was a $270,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase. She won five of 10 starts and earned $1,204,700, making her the leading earner sired by Omaha Beach.

As a 3-year-old, she won the Santa Ynez Stakes (G3) by 5 3/4 lengths and upset the La Brea Stakes (G1) at 37-1 by 2 3/4 lengths. This year, she won the Santa Monica Stakes (G2) in Feb. with a 110 Beyer Speed Figure, according to Daily Racing Form. She followed that with a three-length win in the Derby City Distaff (G1).

Kopion was second in the Great Lady M. Stakes (G2) in July and the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (G1) in Aug. with a 107 Beyer Speed Figure.

She is a half-sister to Amis Gizmo, graded stakes winner Ami's Flatter and stakes winner Aragorn Ami.
