Report: Grade 1 winner Frost Giant euthanized in New York
Frost Giant, a Grade 1 winner who became a popular figure as a pensioner at ReRun Thoroughbred Adoption in New York, was euthanized on Monday due to complications from laminitis. He was 19.
The Daily Racing Form first reported the news, adding Frost Giant “served as an ambassador” since arriving at ReRun in January 2021.
“He was a rock star,” ReRun executive director Lisa Molloy told DRF. “I’m pleased he came into our lives. I really enjoyed having him. It just sucks. You always hope that you’ll find them in the field one day, that they just lay down. I was hoping we’d have a little longer with Frosty, but once the spark had gone out you know that was it.”
Frost Giant, who was a stallion in New York after his racing career, retired to ReRun where he cohabitated with several of his offspring. His last crop includes six current yearlings. Frost Giant led New York’s freshman sire list in 2012 and also shuttled to both Chile and Australia during his stallion career.
On the racetrack, Frost Giant started in Europe where he was a Group 3 winner both as a juvenile and a 3-year-old. He would subsequently be sent to the U.S. where he won the 2008 Suburban (G1) for trainer Richard Dutrow.
