Grade 1 winner Claret Beret dies after Friday workout

Claret Beret, who won the Grade 1 Apple Blossom on April 11, died Friday after a morning workout at Palm Meadows.

The 5-year-old daughter of Not This Time returned to her barn after breezing but died at the barn after a possible cardiac event, according to a Thoroughbred Daily News report that was confirmed by trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. "Claret Beret unfortunately passed away at the barn," Joseph Jr. told TDN. "She was an amazing filly who will always be remembered. May she rest in peace."

Claret Beret was trained by Joseph for Miller Racing, the nom-de-course of Myron Miller. He purchased her privately in 2025 after a fifth-place finish in an allowance race at Oaklawn. She rose up the class ladder afterward, winning a handicap and then racing exclusively in stakes company in seven starts since June 2025.

She broke through at the graded-stakes level in the Royal Delta (G3) in February, winning by five lengths over a field that included Shred the Gnar and Drexel Hill. Claret Beret followed that with a career-best effort in the Apple Blossom, the race that would be her final start. She stalked the pace and drew off to win by 4 1/2 lengths over the champion filly Nitrogen. She worked three times since then, and Joseph had been targeting the Ogden Phipps (G1) for her next start.
