Report: Golden Gate final-meet purses could be cut by 25%
Overnight purses could be cut by 25 percent for the final meet of Golden Gate Fields that starts Dec. 26.
Bill Nader, president and CEO of the Thoroughbred Owners of California, told Thoroughbred Daily News reported that the cut is related to a $3.1 million overpayment of the track's purse account.
The TOC is in negotiations with Golden Gate owner 1/ST Racing and Gaming, according to the report. Nader told TDN he expected further details to be available Tuesday or Wednesday.
Under the proposal, maiden special weight purses would drop from $30,000 to $22,500, according to the report.
Golden Gate vice president and general manager Dave Duggan confirmed to TDN that the track had been in discussions about cutting purses.
Nader also said overnight purses at Santa Anita are scheduled to be cut by about 5 percent for the winter-spring meet, which starts Dec. 26. The track's stakes purses are expected to be cut by about $2 million, according to the report.
