Report: Forte has quarter crack, but Breeders' Cup is possible

Forte has a quarter crack that has prevented him from working since he finished fourth in the Grade 1 Travers on Aug. 26, trainer Todd Pletcher told David Grening of Daily Racing Form.

Pletcher also said the Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 4 is not out of the question for last year's 2-year-old champion.

Forte has been training at Churchill Downs since having the crack patched, and Pletcher said he galloped Sunday morning.

"Just trying to get everything right before we start breezing," he told DRF.

Pletcher said Forte would need three breezes before the trainer would feel running the Violence colt in the Classic.

“We need things to go smoothly from now on but I think we still have time to get there the right way,” Pletcher said.

Forte was the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby after winning five straight, including the Florida Derby (G1). He was scratched with a bruised foot the day of the Kentucky Derby, and he returned in the Belmont Stakes, finishing second to Arcangelo. He then won the Jim Dandy (G2) in his last start before the Travers.
