Report: Forte failed a drug test at Saratoga in September
Forte, the Kentucky Derby favorite who was scratched on the day of the race, failed a drug test after the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga in September, The New York Times reported.
Citing two people familiar with the matter, the Times reported that the case is due to be adjudicated Wednesday before New York regulators.
A spokesperson for the New York State Gaming Commission told Horse Racing Nation late Wednesday morning that "the stewards are meeting with the trainer (Todd Pletcher) today, which is a normal step in the investigative process before a determination is made."
Earlier, a commission spokesperson told the Times "likely would have been adjudicated months ago but for the repeated procedural delays sought by the trainer’s counsel.”
Forte's connections tried Tuesday to delay the proceeding again, according to the report. Pletcher did not reply to a request for comment Wednesday morning.
After the Hopeful, Forte tested positive for a substance used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation, the Times reported.
Forte won the Hopeful by three lengths and went on to be voted the 2-year-old champion after two more wins last year. He started this year with victories in the Fountain of Youth (G2) and Florida Derby (G1).
He was scratched from the Kentucky Derby on Saturday by state veterinarians because of a hoof bruise. Because he must remain on the veterinarian's list for 14 days, he is ineligible for the Preakness Stakes.
