Jockeys Saez, Castellano, Rios are OK after Gulfstream spill
Three jockeys were said to be all right after an eighth-race spill Sunday at Gulfstream Park that resulted in a 3-year-old filly being euthanized, a track statement confirmed.
"Jockeys Luis Saez and Javier Castellano escaped injuries during a three-horse incident in the running of race 8 Sunday at Gulfstream Park, while jockey Jesus Rios was taken to Aventura Hospital due to shoulder pain," the statement said. "Castellano and Rios’s mounts escaped unharmed."
Rios was taken to a nearby hospital. Saez and Castellano walked away from the spill under their own power.
The news was reported first by Mike Welsch of Daily Racing Form.
The Speightstown filly Bo Derek, named for the actress and trained by Todd Pletcher, was euthanized, the track statement confirmed. Ridden by Saez, she was in second place in the stretch of the 7 1/2-furlong, maiden special-weight race when she broke down.
Castellano rode Her Ladyship, and Rios, aboard Poshley, got up after the spill. Rios's shoulder pain was confirmed by his friend and former agent Jayme Wright said in a text message to Horse Racing Nation.
"All scans came back OK," Wright said at 7:20 p.m. EST. "Just waiting to see ortho." Wright said he was being kept apprised by Rios's wife.
Agents for Saez and Castellano confirmed the two jockeys came out of the mishap all right. Saez took off the last two races. Castellano kept his rides.
Bo Derek, owned by WinStar Farm and Siena Farm, was bought as a yearling for $900,000. She had one prior start, finishing fourth in a maiden race at Churchill Downs in October.
Sunday's eighth race, run on Gulfstream's turf course, was won by Be My Sunshine.
