Report: Emmanuel Esquivel escapes serious injury after spill
Jockey Emmanuel Esquivel was unseated from his mount Thursday at Turfway Park and taken to the hospital for observation. His agent Jose Santos reported via Twitter on Friday that he was still sore the morning after the incident, but scans came back negative for more serious injuries.
Esquivel roder 37.38-1 long shot Baby No Worries in Thursday's sixth race at Turfway, an allowance sprint for fillies and mares who had not won three races in their lifetime. She unseated Esquivel near the quarter pole, an incident in which another horse, Maotai, also unseated rider Rafael Mojica, Jr.
Mojica had been named on one more horse later in the card, but did not ride after the spill. Both horses quickly returned to their feet, continued riderless and walked off the course after being apprehended.
No information on Mojica's condition was immediately available on Friday. He was slated to ride in the seventh and eighth races on Friday's Turfway card.
Esquivel has won one of his eight starts so far at Turfway; he won the second race on Nov. 25 with Prince Act, a 5.93-1 shot who sent to the lead and held by a neck over 1.07-1 favorite Red Mule in a claiming sprint. He was named on one horse Friday, 2-year-old Oscar Award in race 6, an allowance optional claiming mile for trainer John Ortiz.
Esquivel has ridden regularly at Turfway during the fall and winter meets in both 2020-21 and 2021-22, and his 19 wins in the winter 2022 meet tied him for third among all riders. Since he began riding in the U.S. in 2013, Esquivel has amassed a record of 658: 105-88-90, according to Equibase.
